How I spent my summer vacation, part 1
We weren't looking for the end of the rainbow, nor were we hunting wild animals on our vacation. If we had been, we probably wouldn't have seen the slightest sign of either. But after we drove on beyond this rainbow in Virginia, we ended up doing some important scientific research that led to conclusive evidence in one of the most frequently asked questions in the English language, at least as it's spoken by Americans, specifically an inquiry about the toilet habits of bears. As often as this question is asked, nobody ever seems to be expecting an answer, which might seem kind of odd when you consider that few of us have seen any solid proof one way or the other. But we found the answer just the same when we climbed Mt. LeConte, which at 6,953 feet above sea level is the third-highest point in our native Tennessee. Here it is: Yes, a bear does, and this one seems to be eating nothing but blueberries. The evidence, deposited smack-dab in the middle of the hiking trail, was fresh when we came across it early in the day, but we weren't inclined to linger around it just then.
More photos tomorrow.
