Beware of auto-focus
This afternoon when I tried to photograph the spectacular silver-lined clouds at sunset, I got not only snapshots but a lesson from the camera. It will control the focus for you automatically, but it won't necessarily focus where you want. So in addition to the pretty clouds, I also got some shots focused on the spots on the window:
The lesson: auto-focus may be convenient, but it takes away your control. Similarly, the news media tend to control our focus automatically, directing our attention to subjects as unimportant as those window spots, while leaving the real picture all blurry.
