The New York Times sees Big Orange -- or maybe just a little orange
Today The New York Times disagrees with itself over an important issue for our times: last night's basketball altercation between the University of Tennessee Lady Vols and Louisiana State. The reporter who seems to have been on the scene, Lynn Zinser, tells us that:
"Nothing about this game was business as usual for the Lady Vols. Not only did Tennessee's legions of fans not dominate the arena — that was done by the L.S.U. fans who drove the hour from Baton Rouge..."
But Harvey Araton's "Sports of the Times" column doesn't mention that the crowd at last night's game wasn't as orange as usual. Au contrere:
"Pat Summitt still made it to the final day of the women's college basketball season last night, her unimposing but resourceful team in tow, the crush of Halloween orange that is the Tennessee fan base close behind."
Based on my own independent observations of the game on television, it appeared that there was a sizable, but smaller-than-usual, orange-clad contingent, not quite a "crush." And the LSU fans seemed louder than the Tennessee fans -- more important, though, the fans and the rest of the arena noises sounded way too loud in the mix compared to the people calling the game.
The Lady Vols (in white with orange lettering) trailed for almost the entire game, then proved that the final score is all that matters. In this case, it was 52-50.
