Flown

The nest is empty again tonight. After coming home to roost for barely two weeks before finding the perfect place to establish his own nest, the firstborn has flown off once more. Everyone else may call it Jersey City, but to me, it's now Jesse City.

Today was the first I'd seen the inside of his new place, and I have to say it's even better than I'd expected. I hope he's enjoying getting settled in; meanwhile if he needs an extra twig or piece of string (or any free advice) for that nest, we'll be glad to help out.

Overtime one more time

The wind is still blowing strong here; so far we haven't been able to confirm that it might have been caused by an excess of hot air in Our Nation's Capital. So far all that talk has not led to taking care of protection for overtime pay for more than 8 million American workers: even though both the House and the Senate voted for that protection, the final bill may not make it to a vote before Congress adjourns for the holidays, in which case it would die. Have you contacted your elected representatives about overtime yet?

Capitol police ARE eligible for overtime, and we taxpayers spent more than $70,000 on that during the recent talkathon.

Computer technicians don't generally get overtime pay these days, even though many of them are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with Blackberries and cellphones attached to them at all times and beeping at all hours, disturbing not only the paid workers but anyone within earshot. Various state and federal laws passed since 1996 exempt workers who make at least $27.36 per hour and are "primarily engaged in software development or other independent, creative work." But a class action lawsuit filed earlier this week against Computer Sciences Corp. charges that most computer support workers are not writing programs or "other independent, creative work," and demands back pay for CSC workers as well as others like them at other companies. The day before the suit was filed, CSC announced that its profits were up 16 percent.

A mighty wind...

...of up to 60 miles an hour required all New York area airports to change their landing patterns today for the safety of all concerned. This one is a minute or so away from landing at Newark:

Ask your legislators to work overtime for overtime!

They managed to find time to give themselves a pay raise, but now it appears that Congress might not get around to taking care of the legislation that was passed by both the House and Senate to protect overtime pay. Seems there's been some back-room maneuvering to delay it. So we're into overtime on overtime once again. Contact your Senators and congressperson NOW and urge them to take care of overtime pay before they adjourn for the holidays. If the measure dies, millions of workers could be putting in extra hours for no extra pay as soon as January.

And now, today's featured photo:

Fallen

In honor of Veterans Day, we remember the 453 American, British, and Polish servicepeople who didn't live long enough to become veterans: their lives were cut short in Iraq. Unfortunately, that number will have to be updated, probably before the day is out. You'll have to scroll through the pages on that link to see all the names as it's only 20 names to a page. I'd include a link to an official Department of Defense list of those fallen heroes, but I haven't been able to find one.

Between Iraq and a hard place

Military moms forced to choose

Greetings to former POW Shoshana Johnson, soon to be a former soldier as well. Someone who's looking up her name using Google or other search engines visits The Dagley Dagley Daily almost every day, because we mentioned her a couple of times while she was held captive in Iraq, and once again when she was discharged with only a 30 percent disability despite being shot in both feet and otherwise injured at the hands of her captors. Spc. Johnson, we salute you and will continue to remind our readers of your service and sacrifice for your country.

When her unit was ordered to join the U.S. forces invading Iraq, Spc. Johnson, a single parent, had to leave behind her two-year-old daughter in order to comply with those orders. Fortunately other family members took care of the child in her absence, and fortunately she survived the ordeal and returned home.

Once upon a time, the term "military moms" referred to mothers of people in the military, not moms who are themselves in the armed forces. But these days with more and more mothers joining the reserves, and more and more reserves being called up, parents are forced to make a difficult choice: obey the law and go, or stay at home and risk the consequences. Army Reserve Medic Simone Holcomb has been given an even harder choice: obey the law and go to Iraq as she has been ordered -- her husband, a career military man, is already there; or obey the law and stay with her children (seven in all) as a court has ordered. Two of the children are from her husband's previous marriage, and their mother has sued for custody. If Holcomb doesn't stay, the couple will lose custody.

What would you do?

UPDATE: Spc. Johnson and former Private Jessica Lynch have been included on Glamour Magazine's list of Women of the Year.

No, it's not a tram...

...it's a Light Rail car, part of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system, which next weekend expands further into Bayonne on the south end, and next spring extends across Hoboken into Weehawken on the north. It's a fun, fast, easy way to travel, and at $1.50 for a 90-minute pass, or $1.30 per ride if you buy a 10-pack, it's cheap, too.

Below, one of the system's happy passengers: he prefers to call it a tram ("Because it is a tram," he says).
