Question of the day

Do you believe Republicanism is a choice?

See my answer below in the comments, and please add your own response to this completely unscientific poll.

The emperor wears ill-fitting clothes

The bulge was evident once again at the third presidential debate, and the Internets (special bonus question -- how many Internets are there?) are abuzz with speculation about whether Mr. Bush is wired:

So far the response from the Bush/Cheney campaign is that it's silly to speculate about what the bulge might be, about who Mr. Bush was addressing in the first debate when he snapped, "Let me finish!" even though no one interrupted him. "It was just a badly tailored suit," White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card insisted.

So there you have it: three badly tailored suits in a row.

Lynne Cheney's flip-flop

She's the author of a lesbian love novel, but she takes offense at the mere mention of the fact that her openly lesbian daughter is a lesbian.

And all that in response to a simple, reasonable, fair question: "Do you believe homosexuality is a choice?"

Immunize yourself

You may not be able to get a flu shot, but you can still protect yourself from an epidemic that's rampant in this country, especially this time of year: lies. Immunize yourself with the truth with this series of information injections:

1) Read "Checking the Facts, in Advance," by The New York Times's Paul Krugman.

2) Read "Prepping for Debate," by Jonathan Tasini at TomPaine.com.

3) Remember that due to an apparently severe shortage of journalists willing or able to moderate this third and last Bush-Kerry debate, tonight's moderator is the brother of George W. Bush's former partner in the Texas Rangers.

If you need a booster during or after the debate, use Factcheck.org and of course Mr. Cheney's favorite, Factcheck.com, as needed or desired.

And remember to keep it on C-SPAN before, during, and after the debate, so that you can think for yourself and limit your exposure to lies.

Disappeared...

...entire buildings, as well as the nuclear materials and specialized equipment they contained, from Iraq, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Iraqi Technology Minister blames the rampant looting during the 2003 invasion, which U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld dismissed by saying, "Freedom's untidy, and free people are free to make mistakes and commit crimes and do bad things."

...at least 11 suspected al-Qaida members detained in U.S. custody, according to Human Rights Watch.

...Bush's lead in the polls.

On the passing of Christopher Reeve

Twenty-five years or so ago, a cancer research lab was established in Dayton, Ohio, and I was the first reporter in town to interview its founding researcher, Dr. Martin Murphy, who had just moved there from New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital. After the lab was up and running, I came back to do a magazine feature. I spent a whole week there, watching the researchers at work, scribbling and scribbling into my notebook as they patiently explained what they were doing and why, making mental notes as they pointed out what I shouldn't touch, and why. Dr. Murphy was the most patient of them all, explaining not only what was happening there but what else he hoped to accomplish. One step in the battle against cancer, he told me, was to establish a medical journal for researchers like himself so that they could compare notes and learn faster. The first issue was about to come out. The journal's name: Stem Cells. It's still being published today, as is its sister publication, The Oncologist. That was the first I ever heard of stem cells. Dr. Murphy happened to be a Catholic, which was then and is now considered a pro-life religion, but he had no qualms about stem-cell research. He believed in it so much he was establishing its professional journal. But that was a long time ago, when the right wasn't nearly so radical.

These days, they don't do stem-cell research at that lab anymore, or any research. Now, it's the Cancer Prevention Institute.
