Time out of Joint

So I'm reading this science fiction novel in which the people think it's 1959 but it's really 1998: they're being fooled.

Meanwhile, in the real world, the calendar may say 2004, but we're going back in time to the days before Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave us a New Deal: the early 1930s. We, too, are being fooled.

How news travels

When I went out to the mailbox yesterday afternoon, I saw a New York Police helicopter flying low and fast along the waterfront, with two police boats following as fast as they could. By the time I got to the hardware store, I found out what they were doing. "Somebody drove a car into the Hudson River in Weehawken," a Hoboken pedestrian was telling a friend. He was almost right. The car didn't quite make it into the water: it landed on some rocks along the river's edge, which gave the driver one more chance to reconsider. He didn't choose life, however: he dove into the water. Rescuers got him out, but it was too late.

I tried to find the story last night, but nobody had reported it yet. This morning, however, both the New York Daily News and New Jersey Journal are on the case.

How to avoid paying employees for overtime: handy hints from the U.S. Government

The U.S. Department of Labor, which is on the brink of changing regulations that have protected overtime pay for many since 1938, has just issued some tips to employers on how to avoid paying for overtime work. Labor unions are appalled, but not surprised.

The Labor Department now says the proposed changes will go into effect in March; labor unions say those changes will deprive millions of workers of the right to overtime pay.

Sen. John Kerry has criticized the Labor Department for its handy hints; we hope that whatever happens in the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 19, Sen. Kerry will be at his desk bright and early on Jan. 20 to vote on the Senate's last-minute attempt to block those proposed changes. Will your senator be there to protect the right to overtime pay (what's left of it) for hard-working Americans? Both of mine will -- Sen. Jon Corzine and Sen. Frank Lautenberg have both been working overtime on the issue.

Happy New Year all around, anytime

If you're like me and you avoided the Times Square New Year's celebration at all costs, you can still experience the moment in 360-degree glory, without having to stay up late and without worrying about how to get to a bathroom. New Jersey photographer Jook Leung, who specializes in photographic virtual reality images, has posted his you-are-there image of the 2004 celebration, and if you've got a minute I really recommend it. The image is in color, but the black-and-white part loads first, so be patient and then click your way up, down, and all around the festive scene.

If you prefer 3-D images, here's one of those from the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit. You'll need to find your own 3-D glasses.

Mars invasion successful!

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit has landed safely and is already sending back postcards from its trip to Mars.

Too bad about the Beagle II.There are still a few more opportunities for contact with the British probe that landed Dec. 25, but nobody is very hopeful at this point.
