There's a new superpower in town
It's the most underplayed story of the day, the week, the month, the year: the European Union now includes 25 nations (including my personal favorite, the Czech Republic), nearly half a billion people, and a gross domestic product of nearly $12 trillion (only $1 trillion less than the United States of America), and is now the world's largest trading bloc. Congratulations, Europe, on pulling it all together, and condolences to Norway, which decided against joining.

Street-striping day
I had to optimize the file to make it fit here, but despite the pink and green effects on the street, you get the idea, anyway:

A memorial, and a memorial
The National World War II Memorial opened today in Washington, D.C.
And tomorrow night, Ted Koppel will spend his entire Nightline program reading the names of Americans who have died in combat in Iraq so far. The program will be simulcast on ABC's Times Square Jumbotron, and a crowd is expected to gather there to watch and pay tribute to the fallen.

A near miss
It's rained so much lately that when I saw the dark clouds on the horizon this afternoon, I set up the camera on the tripod in hopes of getting some photos of the rain approaching. But the rain clouds missed us this time, for a change. This is as close as they got:

A pair of queens
Usually you find Queens to the east of Manhattan, but today we had a pair of them on the other side, as the Queen Elizabeth 2 joined her younger sister ship Queen Mary 2. They were scheduled to head out this evening, the QE2 on her last voyage home from New York, the QM2 on her first. The one in the middle is the Norwegian Dawn. Also in the photo: one Concorde, one aircraft carrier, two helicopters, one tugboat, a barge, a crane, and a goose.
