Farewell, Francis Crick
He figured out what life is made of, and devoted his final decades to studying dreams. Last year, I wrote here about my brief encounter with him.

He invented the superstation, but now Ted Turner speaks out against big media
Here's an excerpt from his piece in the July/August issue of Washington Monthly:
"...A few media conglomerates now exercise a near-monopoly over television news. There is always a risk that news organizations can emphasize or ignore stories to serve their corporate purpose. But the risk is far greater when there are no independent competitors to air the side of the story the corporation wants to ignore. More consolidation has often meant more news-sharing. But closing bureaus and downsizing staff have more than economic consequences. A smaller press is less capable of holding our leaders accountable..."

Swimming in it
Does anybody ever go swimming in the Hudson? Sure: one of our local politicians fell in a few months ago and lived to tell about it. And today, environmental activist Chris Swain finished swimming all 315 miles of it over the past eight weeks. Along the way, he developed a rash, perhaps from the sewage or other contaminants, and got into the habit of gargling frequently. Swain is now the first person ever to have swum the entire length of the river. In between swimming sessions, he kept a journal of the journey.

Overtime: It's over
Congress recessed for the conventions last week without addressing the threat to overtime pay. Unless the Bush administration changes its position, the new regulations will go into effect Aug. 23.
Until then, enjoy your nights and weekends.

Blogging the convention
I'm not blogging the Democratic Convention, but lots of other bloggers are. They're allowed to cover the event, but will they be allowed to use the media bathrooms?
