Lost wages
I'm heading off to The Nevada desert's most illuminated city to confer, converse, and otherwise hobnob with other like-minded (and not-so-like-minded) goons and minions. Meanwhile, it's going to be up to you to speak up for overtime pay by contacting your Congressperson right now, otherwise you may suffer some lost wages yourself if millions of American workers lose overtime pay.
If I can blog from the meeting, I will. Otherwise, I'll see you back here on Monday the 22nd.

Wolf cries wolf, and other hot air
"It's a monster! It's a monster!" Wolf Blitzer reported yesterday afternoon in describing Hurricane Isabel. Now THAT'S responsible, objective, and most of all helpful reporting. Did you notice the disappointment in the newscasters' voices today when they told us that Isabel has been downgraded (but is still a danger to some)? Here's hoping that all that hot air from the media will blow Isabel out to sea.
Speaking of hot air, we turn our attention now back to Our Nation's Capital, where our attention must remain focused whenever possible lest our representatives forget that they represent US.
Today the U.S. Senate defied Mr. Bush by overturning the Federal Communication's decision earlier this year to further deregulate media ownership. Or as the story played in Australia, "U.S. Senate Deals Blow to Murdoch.".
And as you recall, the Senate has also passed an amendment to protect overtime pay for millions of American workers from rule changes proposed by the Bush administration Department of Labor. Now the measure goes to the House, so if you haven't already done so, please please please contact your Congressperson TODAY to ask for his or her support for overtime. If the House doesn't follow through, the Senate vote will be meaningless.

Get ready, cause here she comes
They say Hurricane Isabel is headed toward us, so today's post is dedicated to helping you prepare for the storm and/or other emergencies. After the blackout last month, I recommended this product, and I'm recommending it again today:
It's a combination radio/flashlight that needs no batteries: just wind it up and it works. I have one; I recommend everybody get one. It's no surprise that this radio is now one of Amazon's best-selling products, currently ranked at No. 13.
The National Weather Service offers some advice on how to prepare for a hurricane, and WCBS in New York has put together a nice preparedness guide as well.

Salam Pax hits the big time
Now you can buy the book:
(in Britain, it appears, the book is called "The Baghdad Blog")
You can read the first chapter for free here; if you don't have a PDF reader so you can get to the document, go here to get one free. Visit the Baghdad Blog itself for links to radio interviews, a promo and more.
Congratulations, Mr. Pax. You earned it. We wish you a successful book tour, a safe trip home, and somehow, some way, some day, peace in your homeland.
