Small Press Association Book Fair
We spent most of our day at the Small Press Association's Annual Book Fair, which continues tomorrow at the home of the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of New York, founded in 1785. After the association's "Poor Richard Award" was dubbed "The Ben" by last year's recipient (as reported here on The Dagley Dagley Daily), it has now officially been renamed. This year's recipient of "The Ben" is Morton Entrekin, President and Publisher of Grove/Atlantic. This year's offerings from independent publishers appear to be a bumper crop indeed.

More journalists killed in Iraq
Today Burhan Mohammed Mazhour, a freelance cameraman for ABC News, was shot in the head while covering a firefight in Fallujah. Reuters reports that witnesses said U.S. troops fired at him.
Also today, Omar Kamal, a translator for Time magazine, died from injuries suffered two days ago when he was shot while driving to work.
Both cases are being investigated.

Do not adjust your set
No matter how hard the engineers have tried to adjust the stereo field, radio in America has been getting more and more unbalanced in recent years, with the right channel coming in loud and clear but not nearly the amplitude or frequency on the left. Air America is another attempt to fix that problem. It starts March 31.

Harkin works overtime to save overtime
Here's an update on the overtime issue from the Working Families e-activist network:
President Bush and Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao are still expected to finalize their overtime pay take-away before the end of March. An exact date has not been announced yet. At the same time, Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) is pushing for a vote this week on a legislative measure to block the Bush administration from cutting overtime pay.
The Petition to Save Overtime Pay now has more than 570,000 signers. We'll announce a special new effort on overtime pay you can support next week. For now, it's more important than ever that you reach out to your friends, family and co-workers to let them know about the Bush overtime pay take-away.
Click here to go sign the petition.
You can join the network here.

Show us the jobs!
It's the AFL-CIO's 2004 tour: 51 people who have lost their jobs, traveling by bus across the country to tell their personal stories about how America's job crisis has affected them, and urging all the rest of us (since we're all affected by the job crisis, one way or another) to take action.
As with any big tour, it comes with souvenir T-shirts.

De jure
Today I got to visit the courtroom once used by Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan, back when he was a Superior Court Judge in Hudson County, New Jersey. Brennan was known as "the conscience of the Court" when he served on the highest court in our land. I wish he were still there today.

Their final assignment
Today we remember some of those who lost their lives in the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. Today's New York Times op-ed page features some heartbreaking last letters home from some of the more than 570 American military personnel who died on the job in Iraq. And even today, more than a year after the invasion began, more and more journalists are making the ultimate sacrifice to bring us the news.
