Vacation, part 10: A word of encouragement, and on to the top

Thanks to the hiker or hikers who took the time to leave this message for the rest of us, and especially to those thoughtful folks who attached cables to the more treacherous spots to make the hike safer:

A closer look:

Let's forge onward:

Just a little farther:

We're almost to the top:

We did it! Now we can pause to enjoy the view from Myrtle Point.

I believe those are the Dolly Parton Peaks, named after one of the most famous natives of the Smoky Mountains. If I'm mistaken, as the old bluegrass-festival joke goes, they might be the two-bald-headed-men-sitting-close-together peaks instead.

A brief interruption...

It's Labor Day weekend, and in honor of the occasion we interrupt our virtual vacation to point out that according to this week's print edition of Information Week, 23 percent of information-technology professionals report that their vacations have been interrupted by urgent calls from work.

TomPaine.com is kicking off this rest-for-weary-workers weekend with the first of a series of columns by National Writers Union President Emeritus Jonathan Tasini, who is now the national director of American Rights at Work. His topic is just that, rights at work. Read it to find out if you have any left.

Meanwhile, as the war in Iraq continues despite the "End of Combat Operations" declaration back in May, Salam Pax tells us what happened when the Americans raided his parents' home.

Back to our mountain climb. We're almost there.

Vacation, part 8: A pause to check out the view

As our hike up Mt. LeConte continues, we pause to catch our breath and check out the view of the aptly named Smoky Mountains.

And a closer look at what they call the eye of the needle:

Vacation, part 7: The Alum Cave Bluffs

About halfway up Mt. LeConte, The Alum Cave Bluffs Trail reaches its namesake, which is more bluff than cave. Legend has it that alum from this very site was used to make gunpowder in the Civil War:

The trail splits as it passes the bluffs: the lower path, a rocky stream bed, was much easier to walk on than the dry powder under the bluffs. I wish I'd had sense enough to take the rocky path on the way down, but by the time I realized where we were, I was already onto the powder. Next time, I hope I'll pay closer attention.

Vacation, part 6: Sunbeams on the trail

I hope you're enjoying our virtual mountain climb as much as I am, and I hope you're visiting our Cafe Press shop to check out the end-of-summer sale and great new items.

I thought we'd need heavy-duty sunscreen for our hike, but most of the time we were in the shade. Sometimes the sun did peep through, but not enough to burn.

Vacation, part 5: Arch Rock

Before you can climb the mountain, you have to crawl through the rock: Arch Rock, they call it. Michael demonstrates how it's done:

And here's what it looks like from the other side:

Onward and upward.
