Happy Valentine's Day!

What better way to celebrate than signing this petition for equal rights?

Actually, this may be an even better way to celebrate: 559 couples had done so as of last night.

Conservative groups filed challenges, but they won't be heard until Tuesday at the earliest. Meanwhile, the weddings continue.

What are you so afraid of?

I can't improve on this, so I'm linking to it and recommending it. Don't be afraid to read it.

Here's to the bride! And the bride!

Best news of the day, IMHO: Today in San Francisco, a lesbian couple who have been together for 51 years were married in a quiet ceremony in City Hall. The ceremony was coordinated by Mayor Gavin Newsom, and it wasn't an aberration: Newsom has ordered that marriage licenses be issued to same-sex couples, effective immediately. There should be a special provision for the happy couple to celebrate their golden anniversary right away.

Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, the legislature is still debating. In Wisconsin, lawmakers introduced a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage. Other lawmakers had already introduced a constitutional amendment to ban it.

May they live happily ever after.

The Good News

Advertising is the good news, media guru Marshall McLuhan taught us, and today's Dagley Dagley Daily proves that point once again, automatically at that.

To see what I'm talking about, look at the Google ads section there in the left-hand column: those ads are matched to words in this blog. So when I write about, for example, same-sex marriage, Google serves up ads having to do with that subject. It changes the ads all the time, so if you reload the page, some of the ads will be different. So today, the Massachusetts legislature debates whether to change the state's constitution to prevent same sex partners from having the same rights as opposite-sex partners, a change that wouldn't take effect until several years after the state complies with its Supreme Judicial Court ruling requiring equal marriage rights. Gay and lesbian couples won't be able to start tying the knot until May, but already those little Google ads are a functioning commercial illustration of the fact that there is business to be done and money to be made in same-sex weddings, too. Some couples may need two tuxes, some may need matching bridal gowns, but that's up to them. Commerce has already decided gay marriage is OK.

Speaking of commerce, if you haven't read McLuhan's seminal works on the media, the message, the massage, and the global village, you should. And -- good news! -- you can buy them right here:

The thermometer got almost all the way up to 50 today, which reduced our ice forms to a permanent vegetative state. But there are still some glaciers lurking in the shadows:

A more accurate picture

Through a spotted window and a screen, partially obstructed view, with both journalist and reporting tools reflected in the image -- today's photo is an even more accurate representation of how the news media show us the world:

Meanwhile, our coverage of the melting snow (and nonmelting carrot) continues. Here's the latest development:
