Beware of auto-focus
This afternoon when I tried to photograph the spectacular silver-lined clouds at sunset, I got not only snapshots but a lesson from the camera. It will control the focus for you automatically, but it won't necessarily focus where you want. So in addition to the pretty clouds, I also got some shots focused on the spots on the window:
The lesson: auto-focus may be convenient, but it takes away your control. Similarly, the news media tend to control our focus automatically, directing our attention to subjects as unimportant as those window spots, while leaving the real picture all blurry.

Flood watch
I think the weather service has got it backward. When a "weather event" (as they call them these days) is likely but not certain, they call it a watch. When they're sure it's happening, that's a warning. But by then, isn't it too late for a warning? Today we had a flood warning, but we couldn't do much about that but watch it rain.
Meanwhile, here's all that remains of the ice forms:

Snow away
We have another winter storm on the way tonight, and just enough time to show you some remnants of the previous snowfall:

Nothing short of equal marriage rights
"The history of our nation has demonstrated that separate is seldom, if ever, equal." -- The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, ruling that same sex couples are entitled to equal marriage rights, not just "civil unions."
Click on the excerpt to read the whole opinion:
"For no rational reason the marriage laws of the Commonwealth discriminate against a defined class; no amount of tinkering with language will eradicate that stain."
The court's decision is valid only in Massachusetts. Couples who marry there may want to avoid Ohio, which just outlawed same-sex marriage.

Making a game of it

Earth Rover discovers signs of earth
As the thermometer climbed to a balmy 37 degrees, today's Earth Rover mission found something we hadn't seen in awhile: earth.
Of course, most of this little patch of the planet is still covered in layer upon layer of snow and ice...
...and some other-worldly but apparently naturally occurring frozen formations:

This is where we came in
The Dagley Dagley Daily enters its second year of publication today. Now, as then, we offer photos of the icy Hoboken waterfront. Today we also celebrate the fact that the temperature rose above freezing for the first time in nearly a month. That brought good news for ferries trying to navigate the ice-choked Hudson; not such good news for the ice forms we found during last week's Earth Rover mission. So far this winter, generation after generation of snow creatures have lived and died on the lawn outside our building. You may remember Melty the Snowman, their common ancestor, who was around for a few days in December, 2003.
Oh, the humidity!
