Time reporter saves lives, loses hand

Photographer also injured by Baghdad grenade

Time magazine senior correspondent Michael Weisskopf and photographer James Nachtwey were injured yesterday while riding through Baghdad in a Humvee with U.S. troops. According to the Washington Post, Weisskopf picked up a grenade that had been tossed into the vehicle, losing his right hand as he tried to throw it out.

But if you go to the Time magazine web site, you won't find a word about it. You will, however, get a popup ad offering a 4-week trial subscription. And for an enormous news empire like that, with all its resources, not to acknowledge the sacrifices of its own journalists -- that's just shameful. We wish them both as full a recovery as possible, and thank them and all the other journalists who risk their lives to bring us the news.

The great (fire)wall of China, and a Tennessee tailgate party

We'd like to send out a big "Ni hao!" (that's Chinese for "Howdy!) to all our readers in China, but we can't because The Dagley Dagley Daily has been banned in China, along with all other blogs hosted by Blogspot. That news comes to us from fellow Rocky Top Brigadier Tennessee Ruck, blogger-in-chief at Voluntarily in China. Shi shi (thanks), Ruck!

Tennessee Ruck's blog is one of many (including The Dagley Dagley Daily) featured in today's Rocky Top Brigade Volunteer Tailgate Party, a special Festivus edition hosted by Big Stupid Tommy, who may indeed be big, but isn't the least bit stupid. And he did a great job putting it all together. Thanks (shi shi) Tommy, and a Happy Festivus to all of us. Sorry (Dui bu qi) -- I don't know how to say "Festivus" in Chinese. Or much else, actually.

Quick response

We hear sirens all the time here, as there's a fire house about a block away. But today's sirens sounded particularly urgent, so I looked out to see what was up. When I did, I got the camera for some breaking-news photos:

Fortunately, no one was injured, and the firefighters were able to salvage the owner's belongings, even though the car may be a total loss.

Another blogger for Dean

I'd figured on letting the political process play out for awhile longer, but now that the man we elected President in 2000 has endorsed Howard Dean in the 2004 election, why wait?

The Dagley Dagley Daily hereby endorses my fellow blogger Howard Dean. (Though I have to admit that I agree more on the issues with Carol Moseley Braun.)

After the storm

It's going to take a bit longer to do the animation of the blizzard photos; had it working fairly well on an older version of Paint Shop Pro on a different computer, but when I installed Paint Shop Pro 8 on my own computer, it had no animation functions atall. Maybe they're there, but I just can't find them. Or maybe the new improved version doesn't have animation. Anyway, here are two still shots from Saturday evening:

Snowy rooftops

We put the camera on a tripod yesterday and shot hundreds of photos of the blizzard, and today we've learned a lot about how to use the Paint Shop Pro Animation Wizard to turn those photos into a movie. We still have more to learn, however, before we post one of those time-lapse movies here. Meanwhile, from the Towercam, here are the snowy rooftops of Manhattan, as well as a view of the Hudson County, New Jersey, skyline as the Norwegian Dawn heads out at sunset.
