Speaking of John Winthrop...

...Sen. John Kerry is a direct descendant of the preacher Ronald Reagan loved to quote.

A pilgrim's words, via a President and a Supreme Court Justice

Today, as Ronald and Nancy Reagan had requested, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor read this passage from a speech by the Puritan pilgrim John Winthrop at the 40th President's funeral today. The nautical theme is no coincidence: he wrote it on his passage to North America in 1630.

Now the onely way to avoyde this shipwracke and to provide for our posterity is to followe the Counsell of Micah, to doe Justly, to love mercy, to walke humbly with our God, for this end, wee must be knitt together in this worke as one man, wee must entertaine each other in brotherly Affeccion, wee must be willing to abridge our selves of our superfluities, for the supply of others necessities, wee must uphold a familiar Commerce together in all meekenes, gentlenes, patience and liberallity, wee must delight in eache other, make others Condicions our owne rejoyce together, mourne together, labour, and suffer together, allwayes haveing before our eyes our Commission and Community in the worke, our Community as members of the same body, soe shall wee keepe the unitie of the spirit in the bond of peace, the Lord will be our God and delight to dwell among us, as his owne people and will commaund a blessing upon us in all our wayes, soe that wee shall see much more of his wisdome power goodnes and truthe then formerly wee have beene acquainted with, wee shall finde that the God of Israell is among us, when tenn of us shall be able to resist a thousand of our enemies, when hee shall make us a prayse and glory, that men shall say of succeeding plantacions: the lord make it like that of New England: for wee must Consider that wee shall be as a Citty upon a Hill, the eies of all people are uppon us; soe that if wee shall deale falsely with our god in this worke wee have undertaken and soe cause him to withdrawe his present help from us, wee shall be made a story and a byword through the world.

All Reagan, all the time

It's not just the continuous live coverage of the 40th president's death: The Bush-Cheney campaign web site has become all Reagan also. As far as I know, the man who used our tax dollars to train Osama bin Laden and considered Saddam Hussein a friend isn't running for anything.

Suck in those abs, straighten that spine and please welcome Ms. Denise Austin!

The Dagley Dagley Daily proudly introduces our latest and greatest advertising affiliate: fitness guru Denise Austin.

Last year about this time, the combination of high humidity, high temperatures and/or rain made it difficult for me to keep up my usual exercise routine: walking along the waterfront. It seemed like a problem at the time, but now I realize it was a solution: during that time I discovered Denise Austin's two daily workouts on Lifetime TV. After a year of workouts with Denise, in addition to qi gong, tai chi and yoga, I'm 17 pounds lighter and in the best shape of my life. Thanks, Denise!

The best-laid plans...

...of mice, men, labor unions and mothers oft must be rewritten on the fly. Monday (the official date of this post, even though I'm writing it on Tuesday morning) was a perfect example.

My original plan was to go to Manhattan to attend a rally by the striking home-health-care workers of Service Employees International Union Local 1199, headlined by former Vermont Gov. Dr. Howard Dean. And the union's original plan was for a three-day strike to bring attention to the workers' situation: they get less than $7 an hour of the $17 charged by the agency that employs them.

But by the time the sun came up, my plan had changed: I needed to spend the day at the hospital sorting things out for a family member. As it turned out, the union's plans had to be revised as well, because one of the agencies had settled with the union, and by the end of the day, the union had reached tentative agreements with three others.

A family outing

A neighborhood family took advantage of the extreme low tides today to enjoy a day at the beach, at least until the extreme high tide came in a few hours later. It's just as well they didn't bother building sand castles.
