Havana in Hoboken Halloween is over, but don't put away that costume just yet: tonight is Hoboken's annual Masked Ball. This year's theme: "Hot Night in Havana," and today's unseasonably warm weather fits the theme perfectly. The setting: Hoboken Beach, where a tent has been set up for the occasion. Reserved tables are sold out but general-admission tickets might still be available at the door. Proceeds go to the Hoboken Historical Museum. Toy-gun trick was no treat Why should humans have all the fun? This four-legged Hobokenite demonstrates that the recent dressing-as-fallen-heroes Halloween trend remains popular again this year. And on the subject of Halloween, I don't find much comfort in the news that the gun that shut down the Capitol yesterday turned out to be a toy that was brought into the building for a Halloween party. First, couldn't you folks in Congress come up with a costume that DIDN'T require a toy gun? Second, the people with the gun were long gone from the security checkpoint by the time the guard noticed the image of a revolver on the x-ray screen. The gun may have been a toy, but that was a real moment of inattention. Let's leave the toy weapons at home, boys and girls. And we've got to do a better job of paying attention. Meanwhile, on the subject of fallen heroes, a firefighter has died in the battle against the California wildfires. As his family and fellow firefighters mourn, there's a new angle on the fire story: Governor Gray Davis appealed to the federal government in April for an emergency declaration due to infestations of bark beetles that killed thousands of acres of trees, creating a huge fire hazard. 'With one hand tied behind their back' A round of applause for the firefighters battling the California wildfires, for firefighters everywhere, and specifically for Harold Schaitberger, President of the International Association of Firefighters. Schaitberger gets special praise for using his time wisely, specifically his time on the network news programs today, giving excellent answers to less-than-mediocre questions. "Do we have enough resources to fight these fires?" one morning anchor asked him. No, we don't, he explained. What with budget cuts (resulting from tax cuts and a less-than-thriving economy) and unkept promises, those firefighters don't have enough resources and neither do firefighters elsewhere in America. A long way from the swamp Alligators take to the air We all know you can't take nail clippers on airplanes. But alligators are allowed, even though one flying alligator escaped its container and wandered around the cargo hold on a flight from Miami to Newark yesterday. The 5-foot-long "juvenile" was still in its burlap bag and still had its mouth duct-taped shut when Port Authority emergency crews captured it, returned it to the crate it shared with three other alligators, and then returned all four to their owners. Whether they traveled from there to Manhattan by cab, bus, train, or limo, somehow they made it to New York and checked into the Marriott Marquis Hotel, by which time they had been magically transformed (probably by sloppy reporting) into three alligators and two crocodiles. However many of them there were, authorities discovered that the reptiles had no permit to be transported to New York, so police took them into custody. And why did the alligators (and possibly crocodiles) travel to New York in the first place? Life, death, and somewhere in between Poor Terry Schiavo. Whatever your opinion on the subject of the brain-damaged woman whose doctors and husband were overruled by the Florida legislature and Gov. Jeb Bush, none of us wants to end up in her condition or her position. None of us wants to think about such unpleasant matters, but at least her story reminds all of us that we have to state our wishes about health care or someone else will decide for us. The Miami Herald has put together a handy guide with links to several living-will resources. The Internet Legal Resources Guide offers links to many state-specific living will and durable power of attorney for health care forms, available free. Mattress testing We're several days into the 90-day trial period on our new Tempur-Pedic, and so far we're inclined to keep it. We gave it the glass-of-red-wine-bouncing-up-and-down test the first night, and it worked just like on the TV commercial.
